CBS Plans Talk Show for ‘Survivor’ Host Jeff Probst
By BRIAN STELTER

The CBS Corporation, the longtime distributor of “The Oprah Winfrey Show,” is conceiving a new daytime talk show starring Jeff Probst, the host of the reality show “Survivor,” the company said Monday.

Mr. Probst’s untitled talk show is the first to be announced by CBS since Ms. Winfrey’s show, the most-watched such program in the country, ended in May. The show is expected to start in the fall of 2012, so it is far too early to know what time slots it could occupy on local television stations. But by signing up for a daytime show, Mr. Probst is joining the competition to carve up Ms. Winfrey’s daytime audience.

The established daytime hosts Ellen DeGeneres and Dr. Mehmet Oz have already replaced Ms. Winfrey in some markets. In September, they will be joined by the CNN anchor Anderson Cooper, who is adding a daytime show to his daily itinerary. A year later, at the same time CBS starts the show by Mr. Probst, The Walt Disney Company will start a new show by Katie Couric.

CBS suggested that Mr. Probst’s one-hour show would cover many of the same topics as Ms. Winfrey’s.

“Whether it’s a newsmaker-of-the-day, a celebrity or ordinary folks, Jeff will go further than typical discussion. The show will cover a range of topics from relationships to human interest. And like Jeff, the show will encourage action, change and discovery,” Aaron Meyerson, the president of programming and development for CBS Television Distribution, said in a news release.

As the host of “Survivor,” Mr. Probst has worked for CBS for more than a decade. This month, he has been in the South Pacific, on location for the 23rd and 24th seasons of the show, the final seasons covered under his current contract.

A regular substitute for Regis Philbin on the daytime show “Live with Regis and Kelly,” Mr. Probst has evinced an interest in talk show duties for years. But the deal with CBS effectively rules him out as a candidate to replace Mr. Philbin, who is leaving “Live” in the fall. Mr. Philbin, too, may introduce a new daytime show in 2012.

CBS has an enviable track record in daytime, having spun “Dr. Phil” and “Rachael Ray” out of Ms. Winfrey’s show, and having introduced “The Doctors” three years ago. Mr. Probst’s show will be the company’s first since “The Doctors.”

Jeff Probst Show Likely To Be Jeff Probst Show

by Jamie Zoch  July 3rd, 2011

DotWeekly.com

CBS recently announced that the popular Survivor host Jeff Probst will be launching his own daytime talk show and according to an article on NyTimes.com, the name of the show hasn’t been announced yet.

"Mr. Probst’s untitled talk show is the first to be announced by CBS since Ms. Winfrey’s show, the most-watched such program in the country, ended in May. The show is expected to start in the fall of 2012, so it is far too early to know what time slots it could occupy on local television stations."

Well, I happened to discover a recent domain name registration by CBS and it likely gives clues to what the show will be titled. Not a shocker really but the domain name registered was……

JeffProbstShow.com

The domain name was registered on July 1, 2011 by CBS Studios. It is a little odd that CBS didn’t acquire the remaining popular TLD’s like .net, .org, .info etc just for brand protection but CBS may have just purchased this domain name for brand protection and a different "name" may be used for the show.

My gut is telling me the shows name will be Jeff Probst Show, because it’s a make sense name to use for the show and is fitting to past shows by CBS.

NBCU Ups 'Steve Harvey' Clearances to 55%
Station groups picking up the new daytime talker include CBS Television Stations, Capitol Communications, Cox Media Group, Fox Television Stations, Hearst Television, LIN Media, Local TV and Sinclair Broadcast Group. That comes on top of the show’s launch group, NBC’s 10 owned stations, which picked it up last month. The additions make it a virtual certainty to launch in fall 2012.

NBCUniversal’s Steve Harvey, the daytime talk show with the comedian, author and radio host, has now cleared TV stations reaching more than 55% of U.S. homes, NBCU is announcing this morning. The show is virtually a sure bet to go forward for fall 2012, and the news brings a little more clarity to next season's overall syndication season.

Station groups picking up Harvey include CBS Television Stations, Capitol Communications, Cox Media Group, Fox Television Stations, Hearst Television, LIN Media, Local TV and Sinclair Broadcast Group. That comes on top of the show’s launch group, NBC’s 10 owned stations, which picked it up last month.

Harvey, which is being sold for two years on a cash-plus-barter basis (four national minutes, 11 local), and Disney-ABC’s Katie with Katie Couric are leading the rookie talk show pack for next fall. Katie has cleared more than 60% of TV homes.

These two shows are not alone in vying for 2012 distribution. Stations have been picking up CBS Television Distribution’s talk show with Jeff Probst, from the longtime Survivor host. Those stations include Cox Media Group’s ABC affiliate WFTV Orlando, according to The Orlando Sentinel. The show has yet to announce a big-market launch group. However, NBC is likely to fill that role, according to a few TV station executives.

And, similarly, Twentieth Television’s Ricki Lake talk show has been snapped by some stations, according to people familiar with those negotiations. That show is also waiting for a launch group. Fox is a possibility.

However, many syndication observers say NBC stations and Fox stations may end up cherry-picking Jeff Probst and Ricki Lake in large TV markets.

Meanwhile, NBCUniversal Television Distribution has gained some traction with its new conflict talk show Trisha, with British host Trisha Goddard. Sinclair Broadcast Group picked it up for its mostly midsize markets. However, that show has not cleared any major markets and, so far, the most probable big-market buyer — Tribune — has not committed to picking it up.

There may be enough time slots opening in 2012 for Katie, Harvey, Jeff, Ricki and perhaps Warner Bros.’ Bethenny Frankel, even though several long-running talk shows have been renewed for another two seasons. These include Warner Bros.’ Ellen, NBCU’s Maury, Jerry Springer, Steve Wilkos and Debmar-Mercury’s Wendy Williams.

Warner Bros.’ Anderson with CNN’s Anderson Cooper is pulling so-so ratings so far in the first year of its one-year deals, but it looks as if it will get a second year. Likewise, CBS’s Rachael Ray has been fading in the final year of its current station deals, but is likely to get renewed.

Sony Pictures Television’s Nate Berkus is in the second year of a three-year deal with NBC-owned stations. Still, it’s not a sure bet to move forward if Sony can't clear the show elsewhere.

And both Debmar-Mercury’s Jeremy Kyle and Tribune’s Bill Cunningham have yet to generate ratings strong enough to ensure second seasons. However, both distributors say they’re committed to sticking with the shows for at least one more season.

It’s Official: Jeff Probst’s Talk Show Picked Up By NBC Stations, Cleared In 55% Of US

By NELLIE ANDREEVA | Thursday November 10, 2011 @ 11:35am PST
Deadline.com

CBS TV Distribution’s syndicated daily talk show hosted by Survivor‘s Jeff Probst has finalized a deal with the NBC owned-and-operated stations, clearing the strip for a fall 2012 launch. In addition to the NBC Owned TV Stations in New York, Los Angeles, Philadelphia, Dallas-Fort Worth, San Francisco, Miami, San Diego and Hartford, Connecticut, the show, titled Jeff Probst, has been sold to stations owned by CBS, Gannett Broadcasting, Post-Newsweek, Belo, Cox Television, Scripps Howard Broadcasting and LIN Television — the station groups that previously carried CTD’s The Oprah Winfrey Show — for 55% coverage of the U.S., including 16 of the Top 20 markets. “Stations enthusiastically embraced our and Jeff’s vision for re-creating the classic talk show,” CTD president John Nogawski said. “Jeff developed his listening and storytelling skills on the prime-time hit Survivor, and his hosting appeal was cemented on Live With Regis and Kelly and Larry King Live.” The one-hour talk show, hosted and executive produced by Probst, will cover topics ranging from relationships and family dynamics to newsmakers of the day to families facing challenges. “I’m fascinated with people,” Probst said. “And I love adventure. I can’t wait to bring these two worlds together in daytime, and the added bonus is I get to continue with Survivor in primetime.” As sister companies, CTD and CBS have worked out a mechanism where Probst will be able to do both Survivor and the syndicated talk show with no scheduling conflict. For instance, Probst will be done filming the 2 cycles of the veteran reality series for next season by June when he will segue into pre-production on the talk show.

Jeff Probst had been competing with two other talk show hopefuls, Twentieth’s Ricki Lake and Warner Bros’ Bethenny Frankel, for a spot on the NBC O&Os, the last available premium piece of station real estate for next fall. Rikki Lake is still expected to launch next fall with what was described as a “non-traditional” clearance list, which includes the Tribune stations in New York, Seattle and Hartford, CT as well as sibling Fox stations, including those in Los Angeles and Chicago. The Jeff Probst acquisition does not affect Sony TV’s Nate Berkus Show, which has a deal with the NBC stations though next season. In addition to Jeff Probst, the 10 NBC O&O will also serve as the launch group for the new Steve Harvey talk show next fall. Meanwhile, the station clearances rule out Probst, a frequent substitute guest host on Live! With Regis And Kelly, as a possible successor to departing Regis Pilbin. (He also served as a regular guest host on Larry King Live.) This marks CBS TV Distribution’s first first-run syndication launch since The Doctors.

Yep Sono, hurrah for Jeff, and it's very impressive that he'll be viewed in sixteen out of the twenty biggest television markets. I wonder if he'll curb his cussing for the show? HaHa. I also wonder if he'll be doing the giveaway gimmicks that so many others have done, and do? People really like that feel good stuff you know.
