Jay Byars

25

Tribe Designation: Manono

Current Residence: Gaffney, S.C.

Occupation: Model

Personal Claim to Fame: Being a part of four different mission trips to four different countries.
Inspiration in Life: Bear Grylls – that guy is crazy! And, I just found out he is a Christian. I love his “I can go anywhere and do anything mentality.”

Hobbies: Working out, indoor rock climbing and motocross.

Pet Peeves: Smacking gum, bad breath and clingy texters.

3 Words to Describe You: Active, daring and charming.

SURVIVOR Contestant You Are Most Like: Colby or Rupert. They tried to play the game fair and honest, but they didn’t have the physical ability to perform. I would choose their game play and my physicality.

Reason for Being on SURVIVOR: To experience life in an exciting and challenging way. I want to discover who I am and see if I can really outsmart everyone.

Why You Think You’ll “Survive” SURVIVOR: I have heart. Plus, I’m very level headed. I’m going to be calm and consistent when people are breaking down.

Why You Think You Will Be the Sole SURVIVOR: I know that I have the will and the skill to make it to the end. I have overcome a lot in life, and who you are is how you play. I’m a winner.

Is it me, or did Jay have a part in Adam Sandler's movie Grown Ups? He played the really ripped guy at the water park with the weird voice! Grin

Yeah, right!  laugh

I find this kind of interesting - what Jay says on blindsiding in this interview:

2 (young, beautiful) Carolinians share secrets of 'Survivor'

By Théoden Janes
CharlotteObserver.com

The odds of being chosen to compete on "Survivor" are awfully slim, but there are a couple of things that can improve your chances, however slightly.

One, you can be young and beautiful. That helps a lot. Two, you can be from the Carolinas.

Over 23 seasons, the reality series has featured 23 contestants who have claimed cities in North or South Carolina as their hometowns. When the 24th season premieres on CBS tonight at 8, two more South Carolinians will be added to the list.

We talked recently with Jay Byars of Greenville and Chelsea Meissner of Charleston, who will be vying for the title of Sole Survivor and the $1 million prize. (And yes, they both also fall into the "young and beautiful" category.)

JAY BYARS

Age: 25.

Current residence: Greenville, S.C. (Grew up in Gaffney, S.C.)

Occupation: Model.

Q. What did you do to prepare for being on the show?

Being a model, I have basically no fat on my body, so I tried to bulk up. I hired a personal trainer, and I put on about 25 pounds for the show. So then I started reading a survival book and also (watched) YouTube (videos about) how to make fire. I walked around in the woods and tried to find little termites, little bugs that I could eat. Just crazy stuff.

Q. What was the toughest thing about being out there?

You're with (your tribemates) day and night, that's who you have to live with, and you really do get to know those people. But when it comes time to do something crazy like blindside them, it has to be done. So I knew going into the game that that would be a tough part.

Q. Are you excited to see the show?

I am nervous as heck, man. Number One, it's just gonna be surreal. I mean, it's already surreal. But I'm super-excited. I cannot freaking wait. I think about it all day, every day. I can't even sleep at night because of it. But it's always awkward for me to look at a picture of myself, just because I never thought I would be doing what I'm doing as a job.

Q. In past seasons, faith has played a significant role in "Survivor." Since faith appears to be a big part of your life (Byars has been a part of four mission trips to four countries), did you struggle with how much to put that out there for other people to see?

Yeah. But I believe who you are is how you play, and my faith - that's who I am. It's a part of me. It's ingrained in me. At the end of the day, if you don't have food, if you don't have shelter ... your relationship with God is the most important thing. It's just what you have if you don't have anything else. So I didn't try to downplay that. You'll just have to wait and see how that comes out.

Damn! If I have said it once, I have said it a mi........ actually, I've only said it a few times. Never give up in the immunity challenge, no matter how secure you feel.

It also could be due to editing, he has said he was worried about the women doing this, but was entirely sure it was not going to happen. I would have loved to have seen more of the byplay between Jay and Kim. On my couch witha plate full of carne asada nachos, it seemed completely obvious what the girls were up to!

Yeah, Jay seems like a nice guy and everything so personally I have no issues with him.  He really did screw up their ability to knock off a girl with his horrible game.  Troy (while not without his flaws) is figuring this out BEFORE they can him and is trying to do something.  Jay screws it all up thinking there is any loyalty to him.  His exit interviews will be interesting.
